SR-109: Strongyles in Horses

چکیده
Introduction Parasites live in a host from which they obtain food and protection. They may harm but usually do not benefit the host. The word “parasite” is derived from the Latin and Greek languages meaning, in general, “one who eats at the table of another.” It is said that a “good” parasite does not overtly harm or kill its host. It is theoretically possible that a more benign parasite (e.g. Gasterophilus spp.) is much “older in eons of time” and it and its host have adjusted better to each other than a conceivably “newer” parasite (e.g. Strongylus spp.) which may be more harmful to its host.

Identification of cyathostomes in equines in Iran
Attempts were made to present a practical key for identification of small strongyles, the identification ofwhich seems to be a difficult task to do. 4000 nematodes collected from the large intestine of horses anddonkeys were examined. 18 species of small strongyles of horse and 15 of donkey were found. From 6species of large strongyles found in both animals, we only dealt with 3 of Triodontopho...
متن کاملSmall Strongyles (Cyathostomes): Mystery and Myths
Introduction Although the scientific understanding of small strongyles as they affect horses is increasing, much still remains to be learned. The significance of the different life stages of small strongyles is poorly understood. Also poorly understood are the effects of the immunological status of the horse and the external environment on the pathogenicity of small strongyles. While there are ...
متن کاملAntiparasitic activity of an ivermectin and praziquantel combination paste in horses.
Modern anthelmintic use in horses has decreased the prevalence of the large strongyles, which has in turn shifted the focus of parasitologists to the pathogenic importance of the small strongyles, tapeworms, and other parasites. These studies show that a combination product containing ivermectin and praziquantel allowed efficacious treatment of horses for nematode, cestode, and bot infections. ...
متن کاملScreening for anthelmintic resistance in equid strongyles (Nematoda) in Romania.
Resistance to anthelmintic medication of equid strongyles is a worldwide phenomenon and for this reason systematic investigations of resistant parasite populations are necessary. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the presence and distribution of equid strongyles resistant to the anthelmintics used in Romania, as well as the pre-treatment and post-treatment prevalence of specie...
متن کاملPrevalence of Major Gastrointestinal Parasites of Horses in and around Mekelle (quiha and Wukro)
The prevalence of major gastrointestinal parasites of horses in and around Mekelle (Quiha and Wukro) was carried out from November 2009 to March 2010. Fresh fecal samples collected from 400 horses and examined by coproscopic (direct, flotation and sedimentation) methods. The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was found to be 59.3%; including mixed parasitic infections. Among the p...
